BOTW Multiplayer Mod Now In Development Following Bounty

7views

After one Legend of Zelda fan offered a bounty of $10,000 to anyone who could create a multiplayer component for BOTW, work on a new mod has begun.

Following on from the offer of a $10,000 bounty to anyone who could create a multiplayer component for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a new mod doing just that is now in development. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is considered one of the greatest games on the Nintendo Switch, however its lack of a multiplayer element is something that is sorely missed amongst the Zelda community.

Since its launch, there have been multiple mods released for Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Perhaps the most ambitious is the Breath of the Wild Second Wind mod, which offers players an extensive addition to the base game, including new enemies, locations, and items. Other mods offer players a more humorous layer to their BOTW gameplay, such as mods that swap out the standard Hylian character skins for those of Shrek, Thomas the Tank Engine, and even Toy Story’s Woody. But, while these are certainly all fun additions to the game, Breath of the Wild has still remained a single player campaign.

This could be changing thanks to a BOTW multiplayer mod now in development. Modder Alex Mangue, along with Sweet and Ethi (via Nintendo Life), has uploaded some new footage of their early version of a “work in progressBreath of the Wild Multiplayer Mod to YouTube. The video shows the series’ hero Link exploring Hyrule alongside fellow champions Revali (who is thankfully not showing any animosity towards Link) and Mipha. Working together in co-op mode, the three Champions make short work of Bokoblin camps, use stealth to sneak up on unsuspecting Lizalfos, and scale the kingdom’s Lake Tower, even finding time for a group selfie.

The mod’s development comes following YouTuber PointCrow’s call for a multiplayer BOTW mod last year, offering $10,000 to the first person or team to complete the challenge. While the project is still early days, its creation is an exciting development for Legend of Zelda fans keen for some multiplayer gameplay. There is still a fair amount of work that needs to be done on the mod before it is ready to be released to the public, with the animations currently being rather jittery, but it is definitely a promising start.

As work continues on this Breath of the Wild mod, many are eager to hear more about BOTW 2. Nintendo has not given away much about what its next entry to the Zelda series will involve, with teasers offering up more questions than they answer. The game appears to be targeting a darker tone, much like Majora’s Mask compared to Ocarina of Time (although Nintendo has previously assured players that Breath of the Wild 2 will be unique, and not a Majora’s Mask copy). With the sequel slated to release some time this year, more news will likely be made available soon. In the meantime, however, fans can enjoy the prospect of a multiplayer Breath of the Wild experience finally coming their way.
