James Gunn Hints At More Suicide Squad Spinoff Shows After Peacemaker

Exclusive: Writer/director James Gunn hints at more Suicide Squad spin-off shows coming after Peacemaker and the series possibly setting them up.

Writer/director James Gunn exclusively hints at more Suicide Squad spin-off shows coming after Peacemaker and the series possibly setting them up. After helping bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to life for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn made his way to the world of the DC Extended Universe to write and direct the standalone sequel The Suicide Squad. The film not only served as the launching point for the filmmaker in Warner Bros. comic book franchise, but also marked the debuts of multiple characters to the cinematic universe, including Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 and John Cena’s Peacemaker.

The HBO Max series, created and written entirely by Gunn, serves as both a sequel and prequel to The Suicide Squad as it explores the origins of Cena’s titular character as well as his new missions following the troublesome Project Starfish. Cena is joined by Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland from the latest DCEU film alongside franchise newcomers Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Rizwan Manji, Nhut Li and Lochlyn Munro. As time draws nearer for Peacemaker‘s premiere, Gunn is already looking towards his future in the DCEU.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the upcoming series, James Gunn hinted at more Suicide Squad spin-off shows being in the works after Peacemaker. Though keeping his lips sealed on where in development the potential projects may be, the creator/writer/director noted the finale could work towards setting up these future titles. See what Gunn shared below:

“Oh yes! [I’m thinking about others.] Perhaps [something is in the works]. I don’t know [if the finale will reveal more]. If you’re good at guessing, maybe.”

John Cena as Peacemaker in HBO show

This isn’t the first time Gunn has hinted at expanding his portfolio with the DCEU following his acclaimed debut in The Suicide Squad. The filmmaker has confirmed his plans to continue working with DC for both big and small-screen projects in the future and has frequently mentioned the status of certain characters from his film, namely the goofier Weasel and Nathan Fillion’s TDK, the former of whom was revealed to have survived in the mid-credits while the latter was last seen alive but mortally wounded in the opening sequence. Gunn has also teased a surprise character from The Suicide Squad making an appearance in Peacemaker, making his hints at future spin-off shows seeming far more likely to be connected to this appearance.

Anticipation is rising steadily as Peacemaker draws closer to its premiere, with Cena’s character having received plenty of positive reception in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Additionally, with early Peacemaker reviews praising the series for its goofy and bloody nature, the future is certainly looking bright for the antihero and the Gunn’s time in the DCEU. The wait for Peacemaker is nearly over as the series premieres on HBO Max on January 13.
