In the latest issue of Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker’s off-brand web-shooters offer a hilarious line from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #83
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics‘ Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker’s purchase of off-brand web-shooters leads to a classic Tobey Maguire Spider-Man line making its way into the comics canon. Currently, the original Spider-Man has been down for the count with radiation poisoning. While he’s meant to be recovering in the hospital, simply resting has proven to be quite the challenge for the Wallcrawler and his overwhelming sense of responsibility. As a result, Peter Parker ends up returning to hero work much sooner than he should.
In Amazing Spider-Man #83 from writer and artist Patrick Gleason, Peter Parker is still very weak and still needs to rest in the hospital. While his clone Ben Reilly has taken over as the new Spider-Man working for the Beyond Corporation while Peter’s incapacitated, that hasn’t stopped him from wanting to get back to being Spider-Man as soon as possible. As a result, this new issue sees him returning much too early, especially because his spider senses have become a weakness, painfully warning him of the danger within his body rather than from external threats.
Even so, Peter can’t help but intervene when he hears a call for help outside the hospital, despite not having his usual spider-suit. Instead, what he does have is a replica suit and web-shooters he inadvertently purchased online while drugged up on quite a few painkillers. As a result, Peter realizes all too late that the web-shooters are really just toys. That being said, they do play a hilarious line from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man when he was trying to figure out how to shoot webs in the 2002 Spider-Man film, from director Sam Raimi.
In 2002’s Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker tries a variety of different catchphrases to activate his organic web-shooting (including “Shazam!“), only to realize that it’s the classic finger placement that gets the job done. Even so, the fact that one of the lines used in his failed attempts is used in this issue for Peter’s knock-off shooters is incredibly funny. Furthermore, thanks to weakened Spider-Man getting a sound byte instead of an actual web, he ends up crashing head-on into the car being stolen by carjackers.
While Captain America arrived on the scene, he only made things worse thanks to Spider-Man’s spider-senses not working as they usually do, resulting in Peter getting a shield straight to the face when Rogers assumed he would have ducked. In any case, while the universe very clearly sends Spider-Man the message in this issue that he’s not ready to return just yet, the Tobey Maguire knock-off web-shooters are a fun Easter egg all the same.
