Mortal Kombat 2’s Possible Scorpion Appearance Addressed By Star

Star Hiroyuki Sanada addresses Mortal Kombat 2’s possible Scorpion appearance, revealing he hasn’t heard anything yet but is hopeful to return.

After being one of the better-received elements of the first film, star Hiroyuki Sanada has addressed his possible Scorpion return in Mortal Kombat 2. Sanada starred in the 2021 reboot of the film franchise based on NetherRealm’s fighting video games as Hanzo Hasashi, a legendary samurai who is killed by assassin Bi-Han in the 17th century. Hanzo is resurrected by the end of the first Mortal Kombat with the help of his descendent, washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young, and defeats Bi-Han, now known as Scorpion, with Cole, subsequently saving Earthrealm from the forces of Outworld for the time being.

Alongside Sanada, the cast for the first Mortal Kombat included Lewis Tan as Cole, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao and Chin Han as Shang Tsung. Helmed by Simon McQuoid, the reboot scored generally mixed reviews from critics, who praised its action sequences and honoring the source material, while criticism was directed towards its screenplay and performances. With the 2021 reboot setting multiple HBO Max records upon its release and grossing a modest $84 million against its $55 million production budget, Warner Bros. began moving forward with Mortal Kombat 2 and one star is opening up about their possible return.

While speaking with ComicBook.com for his role in the upcoming action-thriller Bullet Train, Hiroyuki Sanada opened up about the in-development Mortal Kombat 2. When asked about Scorpion’s possible appearance, the star said he hasn’t heard word on if he will be back, but sounds optimistic for his return. See what Sanada said below:

“I have no idea, I didn’t hear anything officially yet. But, I hope they’ll make a Scorpion part, and I will get to say ‘Get over here!’ again.”

Scorpion in Mortal Kombat

Given Sub-Zero star Joe Taslim previously revealed that he signed on for a five-movie contract with the original film, it’s interesting to learn that Sanada has not yet heard about his possible Scorpion return in Mortal Kombat 2. Though critics and audiences were divided on some character’s adaptations in the story and the lack of the actual titular tournament, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were both well-received by fans of the video games, namely their blood-filled fights in the beginning and closing of the film. With Taslim already reportedly set to return with his contract, it seems unlikely that Mortal Kombat 2 would move forward without Sanada’s Scorpion.

Additionally, with original director Simon McQuoid recently having been confirmed to be back at the helm for Mortal Kombat 2, chances seem high that he will want to bring back Sanada for a Scorpion appearance, even if in a smaller part. While Moon Knight‘s Jeremy Slater may be taking over writing duties on the sequel, previous co-writer Greg Russo did tease that the 2021 reboot was developed with a trilogy in mind, with the second film in the series properly featuring the Mortal Kombat tournament, which would in turn open the door for Scorpion to return to help his descendent and the other fighters of Earthrealm defeat Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung and the other villainous fighters. Until further word is given on the sequel’s development, they can revisit the first Mortal Kombat film streaming on HBO Max now.
