Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo quickly learns Peacemaker’s eagle doesn’t take kindly to new faces in a clip from the upcoming HBO Max show.
John Cena isn’t the only person in Peacemaker with bite, as a new clip finds the titular anti-hero’s eagle buddy snapping at Danielle Brooks’ newcomer. Set to premiere on HBO Max later this week, Peacemaker is the first spin-off to stem from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. That DCEU film established Cena’s Peacemaker as someone who loves peace so much, he’ll kill anyone to achieve it. Though he nearly perished after turning his back on his Task Force X team members, a post-credits scene revealed Peacemaker had pulled through and was being recruited for a new world-saving mission.
That’s where Peacemaker the show will pick up, as the helmeted killer (whose real name is Christopher Smith) joins up with another team. Said team includes characters such as Suicide Squad holdovers Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee), silly superhero Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and leader Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji). Peacemaker‘s ensemble cast also includes Emmy nominee Brooks, who plays fish out of water Leota Adebayo. Oh, and there’s also an eagle named Eagly flapping around.
Eagly takes center stage in a new clip from Peacemaker, shared online by series creator Gunn. It shows Leota’s first time meeting Eagly, which starts off rather sweet. As she professes, she really likes animals, and Peacemaker assures her his pet is friendly. Unfortunately, that sentiment doesn’t last very long. Check out the clip down below.
Clearly, Eagly is as abrasive as his owner. At least, he doesn’t take kindly to anyone who isn’t Peacemaker. While the above clip provides a glimpse of what the show’s comedic style will be like, it also previews Adebayo and Peacemaker’s relationship. As various Peacemaker trailers have hinted, Leota isn’t exactly the most experienced member of the team, which makes her an interesting partner for a trained killer like Peacemaker. They seem to be getting along now, but with 8 episodes in the first season, that could change. After all, Peacemaker isn’t exactly the easiest to get along with.
Part of what made The Suicide Squad so successful was the relationships between the eccentric characters. With Gunn serving as the creative force behind Peacemaker, one has to hope the series will maintain its predecessor’s approach to the dynamics between the characters. Based on the above clip, it is doing exactly that, and it’ll be exciting to see how everything evolves over the course of the first season. The Suicide Squad only allowed for audiences to spend 2 hours with the characters, but Peacemaker has more time. That should make for some fun relationships – assuming the eagle doesn’t complicate things too much.
Peacemaker premieres Thursday, January 13 on HBO Max.
