MCU Phase 4 is setting up a powerful new magic hero who will eclipse Dr. Strange in power levels. His existence will redefine magic in the MCU.
WARNING: Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home!
Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is slowly setting up a new magic superhero who is canonically more powerful than Doctor Strange. Ever since defeating Dormammu, fighting Thanos, and viewing over 14 million timelines to save the day in Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange was considered the de facto Sorcerer Supreme, the most powerful magic-user in the MCU. While this title now appears to be taken by Wong in Spider-Man No Way Home, Strange’s extreme power level as a Sorcerer still allows him to protect the world from interdimensional threats.
Speaking of threats, the first magic-user introduced in the MCU was Loki in the original Thor film. In the Disney+ show Loki, the titular character uses a substantial amount of magic such as astral projection and shape-shifting and meets Sylvie and several other powerful variants of himself. Other prominent MCU magic users include Karl Mordo and Wanda Maximoff. Mordo is a sorcerer originally trained at Kamar-Taj who questions the dangerous consequences of magic use. Wanda, on the other hand, is entirely untrained, and in a heartbreaking fit of grief, she invents her own reality and enslaves the whole town of Westview (which seems to prove Mordo’s point). Hela, the Goddess of Death, and Agatha Harkness are also both powerful magic users featured in the MCU.
But another magician is on track to appear as a formidable force in future MCU projects. In Marvel Comics, Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan, is a reality-warping magic-user of immeasurable power. MCU audiences were introduced to Billy as one of Wanda Maximoff’s superpowered twin sons in the Disney+ series WandaVision. While his powers are quaint and substantially under-developed in the show, Billy is historically one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel universe, able to warp multiverse realities with a thought. His powers match and may even exceed those of the Scarlet Witch, and her powers are canonically said to exceed those of the Sorcerer Supreme himself.
Billy Kaplan/Wiccan is a member of the Young Avengers, a team of young superheroes destined to take up the mantle of the original Avengers. In the comics, Billy was first introduced in Young Avengers #1 (2005) as the hero Asgardian alongside his boyfriend Teddy Altman/Hulking and their teammates Nathanial Richards/Iron Lad and Elijah Bradley/Patriot. Billy is destined to become the Demiurge, a messianic figure who will redefine the rules of magic. The history of Billy’s origin and family tree is rather complicated (involving magical manifestations of the demon Mephisto’s soul and subsequent reincarnation, etc.), but suffice to say that his reality-warping abilities will rival and likely exceed those of any user of magic seen in the MCU thus far, including Doctor Strange.
There is currently no official announcement for any specific Young Avengers project from Marvel Studios, but many of the heroes are already cast and can be seen in Disney+ shows such as Loki, WandaVision, and Hawkeye. This Young Avengers lineup – along with Wanda’s desire to see her children again and a post-credits scene in which she hears their voices – leads fans to believe that Billy will inevitably reappear in an upcoming Phase 4 project as the most powerful magic-user in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
