Sony has offered new details on the newly-titled PlayStation VR 2, which will feature eye tracking, 4K HDR, a single cord set-up, and more.
Sony has offered new details on the newly titled PlayStation VR 2. The headset will be on par with the best VR headsets around and even a bit more advanced in some areas, allowing Sony to potentially take VR by the reins this generation. The original PSVR headset was saw success, but was held back by old PS3-era Move controllers and a lack of long-term investment from top-tier developers. However, it looks like Sony is trying to change the tides with PlayStation VR 2.
After quietly announcing the PSVR 2 in 2021, Sony has been quiet about what the future looks like for the device. A number of rumors have indicated the ambition Sony has for the headset and Sony’s handful of details seemed to suggest it is betting big on it. With new controllers built with the headset in mind, the power of the PS5 behind it, and much more, Sony appears to want to be a serious competitor in the VR scene.
That said, Sony took to the stage during CES 2022 and wrote up a blog post to tell fans what the PlayStation VR 2 has in store. For starters, the headset will have an OLED screen with 4K HDR and feature up to 120 HZ for the refresh rate. Sony also confirmed the rumor that the PSVR 2 will beat out Oculus Quest 2’s resolution with a whopping 2000×2040 pixels per eye. The headset will also include eye tracking, vibrations for immersion, and have cameras embedded in the VR headset to remove the need for an external camera. Additionally, Sony noted the PSVR 2 won’t be wireless, but will have a simplified single-cord setup.
