Pokken Tournament 2 Reveal Coming This Year, Claims Leaker

A Pokken Tournament 2 reveal could be coming this year according to a leaker group, bringing a sequel to the Pokémon fighter game to Nintendo Switch.

A known leaker group has claimed that a Pokkén Tournament 2 reveal could be coming this year, with the Pokémon fighting game dropping as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Pokkén Tournament was first released back in 2015 in Japanese arcade cabinets as a spinoff Pokémon fighting game inspired by Bandai Namco’s Tekken franchise. The game, also developed by Bandai Namco, made it to Wii U in 2016 before dropping on the Nintendo Switch in 2017 as Pokkén Tournament DX.

First released in 1994, Tekken is an iconic Japanese fighting game series that helped pioneer fighting on a 3D plane after Virtua Fighter debuted the concept. So far there are seven mainline Tekken games, and the tournament fighter has found massive success within the crowded genre, with two of its games being considered some of the greatest games of all time. Within a year after its Nintendo Switch release, the Tekken spinoff game Pokkén Tournament DX garnered modest success of its own, having sold over 1.16 million sales by April 2018. Pokkén Tournament‘s Nintendo port received unique DLC characters including Ghost/Steel Pokémon Aegislash, Mega Rayquaza, and Mimikyu. A second wave of DLC was also added, which pinned Blastoise to the roster, with a support set that included Mythical Pokémon Mew and Celebi.

According to known leaker group LeakyPanda on Twitter (via ComicBook), a Pokkén Tournament 2 reveal could be coming this year, seven years after the launch of its predecessor. LeakyPanda’s Twitter post included a lengthy list of possible 2022 game reveals, including Rogue Squadron IV, a new Mario Kart, and Ninja Gaiden, among others. On that list was Pokkén Tournament 2, pegged as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, though an exact reveal or launch date has not been confirmed. LeakyPanda believes the Pokémon fighting game is currently in development, though Bandai Namco, The Pokémon Company, and Nintendo have all remained silent regarding a potential Pokkén Tournament sequel.

Katsuhiro Harada, one of the producers for Bandai Namco who worked on the Tekken franchise and Pokkén Tournament, has been open regarding his love of the franchise and eagerness to produce a sequel. Last year, when asked on Twitter if Pokkén Tournament was a one-time-only project, Harada claimed that he would like to return to the series, though he ultimately confirmed that it is not Bandai Namco’s decision, and it is left to The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. He did claim, however, that all three companies have a good working relationship. This seems to be confirmed by Bandai Namco’s development of the first-person photography game, Pokémon Snap.

As with all leaks, this one should be taken with a grain of salt. Neither of the three related companies has confirmed the Pokkén Tournament sequel, though that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Given Pokkén Tournament DX’s success on Nintendo Switch, it seems entirely likely that a sequel could release at some point. Whether that means a Pokkén Tournament 2 reveal is coming in 2022 is yet to be seen.
